menatto® supports proper calcium metabolism in children*

Summary

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, menatto® vitamin K2 (MK-7) effectively raised blood levels of vitamin K2 in children and helped ensure the proper level of carboxylated osteocalcin, a protein that regulates healthy bone formation.*

Background

Vitamin K plays an important role in blood coagulation and bone metabolism.* It supports healthy bone mineral density by maintaining the proper blood level of carboxylated osteocalcin, a protein that helps calcium adhere to bone.* This effect has been well documented in adults, but not in children. Researchers investigated the effect of menatto® on vitamin K2 status and osteocalcin carboxylation in healthy prepubertal children.

Study details

The study enrolled 55 healthy prepubescent children. For 8 weeks, the children took either 45 mcg of menatto® daily or placebo. At baseline and at the end of the study, researchers measured uncarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC), carboxylated osteocalcin (cOC), and vitamin K2, as well as bone health and blood coagulation markers.

Results

In the children who took menatto®, the ratio of ucOC to cOC / UCR improved, as did vitamin K2 status, indicating menatto® supports bone health in children.* In the placebo group, these measurements did not change. In both groups, blood coagulation markers remained unchanged.
